2022 Stats

When Veen got drafted, he garnered comps to Cody Bellinger. Veen is on the leaner, and the power projection isn’t quite on Bellinger’s level, but if he could add another 10-15 pounds it could improve to plus. He can use the entire field and makes good contact. Veen is also an aggressive base runner and projects for a lot of doubles and can steal bases. At times, he is overly aggressive and can get into trouble on the bases, but he’s able to put pressure on pitchers and catchers when he’s on base.

2022 MILB Stats

Tovar is one of the best shortstop prospects in baseball and while his numbers at the major league level weren’t good in his debut year, there’s still massive amounts of potential with this young shortstop. With Brendan Rodgers possibly having shoulder surgery, this opens up a spot for Tovar to take the shortstop position for good. I’ve said in the past how impressive Tovar is to me on both sides of the ball. 2023, is a big year for Tovar, who is one of the bigger future pieces of the Rockies. If his above-average hit tool and solid ability to defend the shortstop position show, the Rockies have one good player on their hands going forward.

Romo’s bat didn’t perform as well in 2022 as it did in 2021, but like most catchers, his value lies in his glove. Romo’s glove has always been highly touted and the development has gone smoothly. He’s an agile blocker and can pick balls out of the dirt athletically. He also has one of the strongest arms behind the dish with quick release times.

Amador is another top ranked prospect that’s almost at the same level as Tovar in terms of talent. Both are extremely young, both have good hit tools and solid defenders at short. At 19 years of age, Amador could advance multiple levels with how advanced his bat is for his age. There’s a solid chance that with how talented Adael Amador is, he makes the Rockies choose between him and Tovar for starting shortstop going forward. Both are great picks, so the Rockies have a good problem on their hands.

Benny Montgomery hits the ball hard and 30+ bombs a season isn’t unrealistic for the former first round pick. He does like to chase and will come with some strikeouts at the plate. While Montgomery won’t be a stolen base leader, he does run well and has posted run times around 4.1 seconds from home to first. There’s a lot of projectability with Montgomery and the power bat is loud.

*No Stats for 2022 Season*

Hughes was the Rockies first round pick and he only made one start in 2022. However, he went three innings, struck out one and allowed one hit. While hist fastball sat mid-90’s, it was his control that made his stuff that good. He’s solid at limiting hard contact but in the end the development of his secondaries are what will make him shine going forward.

Fernandez trails only Jordan Beck and Michael Toglia as the best power tool in the Rockies system. However, he’s not just over-the-fence power, he’s a strong gap-to-gap hitter and will accumulate a lot of extra base hits during his career. This is one name to watch, as he could skyrocket rankings with a good 2023, and I truly believe by next year he could be a top 5 prospect in the organization.

Thompson was another 2022 draftee that has significant potential here as well. He has a smooth left-handed swing that mixes in good bat speed to generate some good pop. His bat will play in Coors as not only does he have some aforementioned pop but he hits to all fields well and should be a good top of the order bat for the Rockies going forward. The Rockies are building a nice outfield of the future with Zac Veen, Sterlin Thompson, and Yaquiel Fernandez ahead of some other prospects that could breakout in 2023.

Jordan Beck had loud power for Tennessee and was hitting missiles into the Houston sky that trended on the internet. His power will play in Colorado and Beck will help provide run production in the middle-of-the-lineup. Beck provides good athleticism for the Rockies system and if they can tap even a little bit more into his hit, Beck’s power could be even better.

Bernabel had another excellent season in 2022 and spent some time developing at the Arizona Fall League. There, he took a step back in terms of result. In a 58 plate appearance sample size, Bernabel hit .111/.155/.185/.340 and just looked overmatched at times. While there still is potential with Bernbel, Arizona Fall League proved he still needs a lot of time to develop into that everyday player he’s projected to be.
