Paul Skenes has excelled tremendously since transferring to LSU from the Air Force Academy. In my mind, Skenes is the best college arm in the draft and can consistently hit triple digits with his fastball while presenting two above-average or better secondaries. Skenes should go top five overall in this year’s draft and this latest scouting report takes an in-depth look at what Skenes has to offer.

Pure Filth:

As you can see in the tweet here, Skenes’ possesses a filthy changeup. The main issue I’ve seen that prevents me from grading it out as a future plus grade, is that the pitch can get away from him. If the right team can develop better command of the pitch, it could easily be plus. But until I see the result, I’m comfortable with a 55 grade.

Final Thoughts:

2023 is the year for the Pirates to not fool around and pass on Dylan Crews, but Paul Skenes has made a lot of noise this spring and there’s a strong chance that both LSU Tigers go as the top two picks in the country. He should develop into a front end rotation pitcher regardless of which team takes him. Skenes’ electric arm and outstanding secondaries make it easy to project a lot of strikeouts coming from him.
