Professional Debut
Vidal Brujan came with little fanfare as an international amateur, signing with the Rays for $15,000 in 2014.
In 2015, Brujan was assigned to the Dominican Summer League where his statline was .301/.411./.403.
In 2016, Brujan played most of the season in the Gulf Coast League. In 202 at-bats, he had 57 hits, scored 41 runs, and obtained 8 RBI’s.
In 2017, Brujan played for the Hudson Valley Renegrades in the Low A Ball level. He posted a .285 batting average with 15 doubles, 5 triples and 3 home runs.
In 2018, Brujan split time with the Charlotte Stone Crabs of High A Ball and the Bowling Green Hot Rods of Class A Ball. In just 27 games in Charlotte, he had his best moments, where his statline was an impressive .347/.434/.582. In Bowling Green, Brujan has 118 base hits in 337 plate appearances. In all of 2018, he stole 55 bases and was caught stealing 19 times.
Brujan was reassigned to High A Ball in 2019 where his batting average was .290 and a total of 68 bases. After 47 games, Brujan was promoted to double A. In double A, Brujan slashed .266/.336/.391. In 2019, he had a total of 48 stolen bases.
Hit: 50/60
Brujan has shown to be disciplined in the strike zone who doesn’t swing at bad pitches. Throughout his minor league career he has almost as many walks (187, 10.5%) as he does strikeouts (197, 11.1%). This shows his ability to get on base consistently.
When Brujan is hitting righty, he seems to be a more contact hitter where he prioritizes putting the ball in play to utilize his speed.
As a lefty, Brujan can swing with some loft and hit the ball in the gaps. He has shown a knack for making solid line drive contact.
Brujan can hit the Fastball well but struggles to hit off speed pitches especially away from him.
Power: 30/35
Brujan’s power mainly comes when he is batting lefty. While he does have some pop in his lefty swing, he simply doesn’t project to be plus power hitter. Also, all of his home runs were against RHP’s. Moreover, as a righty hitter, all of his extra base hits are mainly due to his speed.
His ISO power was 112 (poor) in 2019 which means he won’t hit more than 10 HR’s in a season.
Arm: 50/55
Brujan’s arm strength is not great but solid enough to where he can play Shortstop or 2nd base. His throws are accurate and shows quick release on double plays.
Field: 50/55
Brujan’s pure speed gives him range in the infield. He has solid glove skills and reacts well to the ball. The 23-year-old is very versatile. His natural positions are at 2nd base and shortstop but has also played well at centerfield.
Speed: 70/70
Brujan has plus-plus speed. He is a threat on the basepaths and can disrupt the defense. Brujan racked up 121 steals (129 attempts) across seven minor-league stops from 2016 to 2019.
In the Arizona Fall League he posted the second fastest home to first time of 3.72 seconds (from the left handed batters box) while beating out a bunt.
Future Value: 55
Vidal Brujan is one of the most dynamic prospects in all of Major League Baseball. He is overshadowed by Wander Franco in the Tampa Bay Rays system, but that doesn’t mean he should be overlooked by Rays fans.
He projects to be a Ketel Marte type player where his strengths are his versatility and speed. Brujan may benefit from switching to CF where athleticism and speed would shine. His power is his weakest tool.
