Colton Cowser is a Cypress, TX native who has had quite an impressive track record since stepping foot onto Sam Houston State University’s campus in Huntsville, TX. Despite not having much-recruiting activity in his high school days at Cypress Ranch, where he was teammates with stud prospects Ty Madden (University of Texas), Matthew Thompson (Chicago White Sox organization), JJ Goss (Tampa Bay Rays organization), and Jared Alvarez-Lopez (San Diego Padres organization), the lefthanded-hitting Cowser had a breakout freshman campaign in 2019 that saw him hit .361 (78-216) with 17 doubles, seven triples, and seven home runs to go along with nine stolen bases. He earned the Southland Conference Hitter of the year and a spot on the collegiate national team that summer and MVP honors for the series against Cuba. In both 2020 and 2021, the Sam Houston State Bearkat has been named to the preseason Golden Spikes Award Watchlist and was named to numerous preseason All-American teams. Through the first 29 games of the 2021 season, Cowser is hitting .375 (39-104) with a career-high 12 home runs to go along with 23 walks and nine stolen bases (tied for a career-high).

Presently, there are question marks about Cowser’s ability to hit at the next level. Cowser has shown strong bat to ball skills but started off the 2021 NCAA season accumulating more strikeouts than desired. Like the 2020 season, before it was cut short, Cowser has also started off the season slowly. With proper development, his hit could turn into an above-average tool as he hits from an upright, slightly open stance with his knees slightly bent and medium handset. At times, he rests his bat on his shoulder until the pitcher gets into his windup and swings to make contact. He is selective at the plate and shows a patient approach.
Power: 30/50
Cowser has shown good pop throughout his collegiate career, but pitching in the Southland Conference is nowhere close to the pros. His power is developing, and it should turn into a Major League average tool with the possibility of 20 homeruns to go along with a lot of doubles and triples due to his speed and size, but the possibility of 25+ homeruns is unrealistic as he has a more contact oriented swing.
Glove: 45/55 | Arm: 55/60
Originally an outfielder in high school, the Bearkats experimented with him at third base sometimes during his freshman year, most likely due to his arm strength. He did not appear to be comfortable and has even stated he loves being in the outfield. A centerfielder now, Cowser has a solid chance to stick at this position at the next level but could possibly move over to rightfield where his arm would be a natural fit. He is improving his read on fly balls and learning routes and gets to the ball quickly. His arm isn’t perfect, as some throws can be inaccurate, but he does display plenty of arm strength in the outfield and it should play at any outfield position.
Speed: 55/55
Another above average tool, Cowser hustles down the first base line and has wide turns when trying to advance to second. He has shown the ability to steal bases in college, but in the pros, he might not steal more than a dozen in a season. However, he should still rack up plenty doubles and triples as he has long strides and is an aggressive baserunner.
Future Value: 50
Colton Cowser should be a day 1 draft pick in July. There are concerns over his hit tool as the Southland Conference isn’t the best conference in the NCAA for pitching competition, but he has shown strong bat to ball skills. It could take some time for him to develop in the pros but if developed properly, Cowser looks to hit around .270 in the future with 20 homerun capabilities and good gap-to-gap power, a low strikeout rate, and steal around 10 bases. He’s not an elite talent but should compete in the Major Leagues with four tools graded above-average or better.
